Bulli Bai ‘auction’: FIRs filed in Mumbai & Delhi, site blocked – Times of India

MUMBAI: Mumbai cyber police have initiated a probe into complaints that photos of 100 prominent Muslim women, including journalists, were uploaded for auction on an app, Bulli Bai, on Saturday.
Delhi police, too, have registered an FIR based on the complaint of a journalist whose photo had been uploaded. With the issue sparking outrage, GitHub, the hosting platform, has blocked the user, IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday.
The uploading of pictures on ‘Bulli Bai’ app was similar to the ‘Sulli Deals’ upload last July. Once opened, a Muslim woman’s face would be randomly displayed as ‘Bulli Bai’. No concrete action has been taken against the perpetrators in the ‘Sulli Deals’ case yet.

Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Saturday had flagged the ‘Bulli Bai’ app to Mumbai Police and Maharashtra minister of state for home and information & technology Satej Patil.
Taking serious cognisance of misogyny and communal hatred towards women from the Muslim community on Twitter, Patil ordered immediate and strict action against the perpetrators.
Within hours, Mumbai Police initiated an inquiry. The west region cyber police station on Saturday filed an FIR case under IPC sections 153 (A) (spreading enmity), 153 (B) (imputations, assertions to national integration), 295 (A) (outraging religious feelings), 354D (stalking), 509 (sexual harassment), 500 (defamation), as well as under the IT Act Section 67 (publishes or transmits obscene materials) against the Twitter handle-holders and ‘Bulli Bai’ app developer.
Patil told TOI: “The Mumbai cyber cell has initiated the probe, but as the site and link have been blocked, it is unclear how many victims are from Mumbai and Maharashtra.”
Patil also tweeted: “Digital platforms like these are rife with misogyny and communal hatred aimed at women. This is very disturbing and shameful. Maharashtra Govt. is taking strong actions against such platforms. I have instructed @MahaCyber1 for the same @ they are on it. ”
