Mumbai: One dead, another injured after falling in gutter – Times of India

MUMBAI: One person was injured while another died after falling into a manhole in Mumbai on Saturday afternoon.
According to BMC officials both were contractual labourers of the private contractor at the site, and were working on fixing new water pipeline near gate number 5 of the Bombay High Court in Fort Area.
Officials from the civic disaster management department said that around 3.29pm on Saturday they received a call about two persons having fallen into a gutter. A team of fire brigade and local police were immediately deployed to the site. Of the two, one person was rescued and sent to GT hospital for treatment. He was identified as Sukarkumar Singh, 35 whose condition is stable.
Another 34-year-old Pintu Singh was declared dead at JJ Hospital. Pintu was missing initially but was rescued by fire brigade officials. However, he was declared dead on arrival at the hospital
Explaining about the work that was being carried out BMC said, “The preparatory work for the newly laid 1200 mm diameters water main between flora fountain to Churchagate station along Veer Nariman Road was in progress on Saturday such as dewatering of body water by mechanical means by using pumps by BMC appointed contractual agency, around 3 pm. Two labourers entered inside the 1200 mm deep water main from access manhole at about 30 meter towards flora fountain from churchgate end. At the junction of KB Patil Marg & Veer Nariman Road due to existence of Tata power cables and other utilities water main alignment is slightly bend at this location where the two laboureres were got trapped. Contractors site supervisor immediately with the help of other labourer rescued one labourer.”
