Mumbai News Live: Man who returned from South Africa tests positive for Omicron; first case in Maharashtra – The Indian Express

Mumbai Live News:   A 33-year-old man, who returned to Kalyan Dombivali municipal area near Mumbai from South Africa, tested positive for Omicron Covid variant on Saturday, the Maharashtra Health department said. This is the first confirmed case of Omicron in Maharashtra.

The man arrived in Mumbai on 24th November 2021 from Capetown, South Africa through Dubai and Delhi. He hasn’t taken a dose of the Covid-19 vaccine yet. He is mildly symptomatic and is being treated at the Covid Care Centre in Kalyan-Dombivali. His 12 high-risk contacts and 23 low-risk contacts have been traced and all of them have been tested negative for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) released a set of rules for travellers from ‘at risk’ nations who are under home quarantine. According to the new guidelines, officials will make physical visits to homes to ensure proper monitoring and if in case a traveller is found breaking the rules, he/she would be booked under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and Epidemic Act, 1897. According to BMC, 14 international travellers from ‘at risk countries’ have tested Covid-19 positive in Mumbai. A seven-day quarantine is compulsory for travellers from ‘at risk’ nations.

In another news, Mumbai Police Crime branch has filed a chargesheet before a magistrate court against former police commissioner Param Bir Singh, dismissed officer Sachin Waze and two others in an extortion case registered at Goregaon police station. The case was later transferred to crime branch.

Maharashtra, on Friday, recorded 664 new coronavirus infections and 16 fatalities. Mumbai reported the highest 193 infections, followed by 84 cases in Pune city. Presently, the highest number of 1,886 active cases are in two Mumbai districts.
