Mumbai rains LIVE: Train services affected as heavy showers batter Mumbai, other areas – India Today

Mumbai has been witnessing incessant rainfalls for four consecutive days now and rains are likely to batter the financial city on Thursday as well. According to the India Meteorological Department heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to take place in Mumbai and suburbs with the possibility of extremely heavy rains at isolated places.

The weather department on Wednesday had issued “red” alert for Mumbai, predicting heavy rains over the next three-four days in the western and central parts of the country, news agency PTI reported. The IMD also issued an “orange” alert for Maharashtra’s East Vidarbha region, which includes districts such as Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Yavatmal, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy showers.

Besides Mumbai, the IMD also predicted widespread rainfall in Goa, Konkan, central Maharashtra and Vidarbha regions. The Marathwada region of Maharasthra is also expected to receive widespread showers till Thursday and the rain intensity is likely to reduce subsequently, the IMD said on Wednesday.

10:30 am: Train services on the Konkan Railway route in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district were suspended on Thursday morning following heavy rains in the area, an official said.

The Nashik-Jawhar route was closed following a landslide and operations there are likely to resume by Thursday evening, Palghar Collector Dr Manik Gursal said in a message, and asked people to use the Trambak-Deogaon-Khodala route.

Train services of the Central Railway in the Kasara Ghat section of Thane district and near Lonavala hill town in Pune district adjoining Mumbai were also severely affected after heavy rains caused flooding, washing out of tracks, boulder crashes and mudslides in that region, officials said.

10:15 am: Heavy rains lashed Thane and Palghar districts in Maharashtra adjoining Mumbai during the night and on Thursday morning. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were roped in to rescue hundreds of stranded people, PTI quoted an official as saying.

Rail tracks at Umbermali station near Kasara were “submerged up to the platform level” and there were boulder crashes in the Ghat section. “Train services were suspended,” district authorities said, adding that work to remove the boulders was underway.

Some villagers were also stranded due to heavy rains. In Cherpoli, some stranded people were rescued with the help of boats, an official said. Meanwhile, Some villages in the Sahapur taluka were marooned, the official said, adding that local authorities with the help of the NDRF rescued hundreds of people from those places.

On Wednesday, Mumbai received heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms, and lightning, resulting in heavy waterlogging at several locations. The intensity of rainfall dipped in the afternoon but increased again at night. Trains and traffic were not affected, however, at least six rooms of a chawl collapsed, while eight two-wheelers were damaged in a wall collapse due to incessant rainfall in Thane and Palghar districts of Maharashtra, news agency PTI reported.
