Mumbai rain: Parts of Mumbai were thrown out of gear on Sunday as the city witnessed incessant overnight showers, leading to waterlogging and several rain-related incidents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai in the backdrop of heavy rains.

A sudden change in climatic conditions has led to Mumbai witnessing over 100 mm rainfall in six hours, the IMD said in an early morning bulletin. It said Mumbai would receive “heavy to very heavy” rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

The heavy rains even reminded some of the 24-hour record 944 mm downpour of 26 July 2005.

The IMD said Pune will witness “Generally cloudy sky, light to moderate rain very likely (isolated heavy to very heavy rain in ghat areas)” on Monday.

Maharashtra CM to chair high-level meeting at 6 pm

Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray will chair a high-level meeting of officials through video conference at 6 pm today in view of the situation following heavy rains in Mumbai, the Chief Minister’s Office informed.

Mumbai rain: Sad that 21 people died, says Minister Vijay Wadettiwar

Maharashtra Minister Vijay Wadettiwar on Mumbai rain: Santa Cruz received around 235-270 mm of rain while Chembur saw 200 mm yesterday. Red alert was issued and people were evacuated to safe places from danger zones. Such incidents are normal amid 300 mm rain in a day. Sad that 21 people died.

  • Mumbai rains: Water complex hit, boil drinking water, BMC tells citizens:

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Sunday asked citizens to boil water before drinking as heavy rains over the last two days had led to flooding in the water purification complex at Bhandup. The flooding has affected electrical equipment that control the pumping and filtration processes there, one of the major sites of water supply to the country’s financial capital, he said. While the pumping mechanism would be restored in a few hours, much more time will be taken to get the filtration process up and running, the official said, adding that boiling water before drinking was the best precaution at the moment.   • Train services resume on Mangaluru-Mumbai line:

Southern Railway resumed passenger train services on the Mangaluru-Mumbai line, after restoring the Kulshekar-Padil section of the track which was blocked after a massive landslip on Friday. Southern Railway Palakkad division officials said the track was certified fit for operation in the morning. The first train to pass the section was the Ajmer- Ernakulam Maru Sagar Express special at 8.55 AM The running track, including the overhead equipment of railway electrification was made fit for operation by Saturday evening itself. More than 75 workers from the division worked round the clock for 45 hours to clear the debris that had fallen on the tracks. Many trains on the route were diverted, rescheduled or cancelled after the landslip near Kulshekar tunnel at 10.40 am on Friday due to heavy rains in the previous days.

  • Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray said those living on the Mithi river bank and other places close to the shore should be evacuated early. Thackeray also asked authorities to ensure medical facilities in jumbo Covid centres are not affected because of the heavy rains. “Steps should be taken to drain out rain water from low-lying areas. Roads should be cleared for vehicular traffic movement. Steps should be taken to restore the suburban railway service at the earliest,” he said. Meanwhile, former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya visited the Bharatnagar locality in Mahul area of Mumbai where 17 people died after a compound wall collapsed following a landslide in the wee hours of Sunday.
  • IMD has issued fresh weather alert for next few days till 21st July. As per the latest update, rainfall activity is very likely to increase with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Western Himalayan Region (Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand) and adjoining northwest India (Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and north Madhya Pradesh) from 18th July to 21st July and decrease in rainfall activity over the same regions thereafter.
  • Maharashtra environment minister Aditya Thackeray visited the site of the wall collapse in Chembur. “Over 200 mm rainfall was recorded yesterday. The incident was a natural disaster. Muddy water came from the hill. The wall was made of RCC but nothing could stop the force of water. We are trying to resolve the formal housing crisis in Mumbai,” he said.
  • Water supply in various parts of Mumbai is affected after filtration and drainage plants at the Bhandup water purification complex were shut down due to inundation. “Efforts are underway to restore water supply,” said BMC.
  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced 5 lakh compensation for the kin of the deceased and free treatment for the injured.
  • A man died due to electrocution in the Andheri area, said the BMC.
  • A 16-year-old boy died after a forest department compound wall collapsed in suburban Bhandup, an official said.
  • Union home minister Amit Shah offered condolences. “Heartbroken accident in Mumbai’s Chembur. Shocked by the information. I express my deepest condolences on this irreparable loss to those who have lost their loved ones in this accident. May God give strength to the bereaved family members to bear this loss,” he said.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind offered his condolences. “Deeply saddened by the news of many casualties in incidents following heavy rain in Mumbai’s Chembur and Vikhroli areas. I express my condolences to the bereaved families and wish for successful relief and rescue work,” he wrote on Twitter.
  • The Prime Minister’s Office has announced that 2 lakh each would be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to wall collapses in Mumbai from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
  • In the incident that took place in Vikhroli, five people have been declared dead, said Prashant Kadam, the deputy commissioner of police (Zone 7).
  • The death toll in the Chembur incident has risen to 17. In addition to this, two injured persons were treated and discharged from a hospital.

  • List of suburban train services restored:
  • At least four wall collapse incidents have been reported in Maharashtra’s Thane due to heavy rains.
  • One person is feared to have drowned in a swollen drain in Thane, reported news agency PTI.
  • Four auto-rickshaws were damaged in one of the wall collapse incidents, Thane Municipal Corporation’s regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.
  • In another incident, three people were killed in the Vikroli area after a building collapsed in the early hours of Sunday.
  • At least 11 people were killed after a wall collapsed on some shanties in Chembur’s Bharat Nagar area due to a landslide. As per Mumbai’s fire brigade team, 16 persons were rescued from the debris.
  • Central Railway said that due to waterlogging in tracks at Dadar, Parel, Matunga, Kurla, Sion, Bhandup and other locations, train services on mainline were suspended between CSMT and Thane.
  • “CSMT to Vashi services, including Bandra/Goregaon suburban services, are also not working,” said Shivaji Sutar, chief spokesperson of Central Railway.
