IIT Bombay, seven other Indian schools in world’s best 400 universities – Mint

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, is among the world’s top research universities, achieving a perfect score of 100/100 in the citations per faculty (CPF) metric like some others.

IIT Bombay and Delhi and IISc Bangalore, all feature among the global top 200 overall. IIT Bombay, with a joint global rank of 177, retains its position as the best in India for the fourth consecutive year. However, it has fallen five positions from the previous edition of the ranking. It is followed by IIT Delhi (at 185th), and IISc (at I86).

IIT Madras improved its ranking by 20 places to the 255th position globally, while IIT Kanpur got the global rank of 277 against 350 last time. IIT Guwahati has entered the top 400 list this time with a global rank of 395, moving 75 positions up from the previous edition of the ranking.

IIT Delhi has become “India’s second-best university, having risen from the 193rd spot to the 185th over the last 12 months by overtaking IISc Bangalore”, the British ranking agency said.

Globally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) achieves a record 10th consecutive year as world number one. The University of Oxford has risen to second position for the first time since 2006, while Stanford University and the University of Cambridge share the third spot.

As a sector, Indian universities have made consistent progress in the QS Academic Reputation (AR) metric. As many as 20 of India’s 35 entrants have improved their AR scores, while only 9 have experienced drops in the AR rank. Indian universities have also improved their research impact relative to their global counterparts. Of the 35 Indian universities in the QS ranking, 17 have seen a rise in the CPF score, the ranking agency said.

“According to the CPF indicator, when universities are adjusted for faculty size, IISc Bangalore is the world’s top research university. IIT Guwahati (41st for CPF) is also a top-50 research institution,” the survey said.

In contrast, Indian universities continue to struggle in the measure of institutional teaching capacity, with 23 of India’s 35 universities falling in the faculty/student ratio indicator.

Jawaharlal Nehru University makes its debut in the QS World University Rankings placing in the 561-570 band. In total, 35 Indian institutions are featured in the published table. Of these 35, seven have improved their position, seven have declined in rank, 14 have remained in same positions as the last edition, and seven are new participants.
