Mumbai: Six held for sexual assault of minor befriended on social media – Times of India

MUMBAI: Malvani police arrested six people—all in the age group between 19 and 23—for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl from the northern suburban part of the city. The six were arrested after the survivor’s mother called the police on Friday night and lodged a complaint after she returned home. The six, including the survivor’s boyfriend, has been booked for rape and under the POCSO Act.
The accused, according to the complainant, committed the offence over a different time interval on May 31 and its intervening night of June 1. A case of kidnapping was registered with the Malvani police after the survivor’s mother approached them and filed a missing complaint on May 31 late evening. “The accused are survivor’s social media friends,” said the officers.
A police officer said the survivor returned home on June 1 and despite being questioned by her parents, she did not reveal anything. The survivor’s mother then informed the police and a police team got the girl into confidence who then revealed about the incident after the birthday party of one of her friend’s she attended. “We are awaiting the medical examination report of the survivor,” said the officer.
In the statement, the survivor said, “I attended the birthday party on an invitation I received from one of my Instagram friends near a hotel in Madh Island.” “It was after the party the accused known to the survivor at the different time committed the offence. She also complained that her boyfriend took sexually assaulted her a week ago. A case has been registered against the boyfriend.”
