Bombay HC seeks scheme to curb spitting – Times of India

MUMBAI: Bombay high court on Wednesday expressing concern at the spitting habits of people said fines alone may not stamp out the distressing practice among the populace, but they need to be educated too.
The HC called for a proper scheme from BMC to ensure a curb on people’s urge to spit in public places. The HC bench of chief justice Dipankar Datta and justice Girish Kulkarni was hearing a PIL filed by advocate Armin Wandrewala to bring to naught the nuisance especially during the pandemic when spitting may help transmit Covid-19 she said.
She said the BMC should implement its by-laws diligently. “Apart from collecting fines why cannot there be an educational drive at public places, slums and tell people not to spit and its impact. That should work,’’ the bench remarked adjourning the matter to July 7.
The bench commented that this may be the only Petition in the whole of India about spitting in public places. It queried if some steps could be taken to educate the public about dangers and evils of spitting including talking to groups of people. The HC said authorities could come up with a proper details scheme or policy to stamp out spitting menace, taking suggestions from Wandrewalla.
