Mumbaikars feel the chill as temperature dips to season’s lowest; city’s AQI slips back into ‘unhealthy’ category

Mumbai, on Friday, woke up to pleasant weather as the city recorded 14.8 degrees Celsius – the season’s lowest minimum temperature.

“The Santacruz observatory recorded the minimum temperature of 14.8 degrees Celsius on Friday morning, making it the season’s lowest so far,” the India Meteorological Department said.

“The northerly winds have pushed the mercury levels down. There will be no large change in the temperature for the next 24 hours, but a gradual rise in it is expected in the coming days,” it added.

On Wednesday, the city had recorded the lowest temperature (for January) of 2021 at 15.3 degrees Celsius.

Earlier, this winter season’s lowest minimum temperature in the city was 15 degrees Celsius that was recorded on December 29, 2020.

Not only in Mumbai, but the minimum temperatures have dropped in other parts of Maharashtra as well. The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms with lightning and light rainfall at isolated places over Wardha and Nagpur districts of Vidarbha.

AQI in the ‘Unhealthy’ category

Meanwhile, in Mumbai, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) slipped back into the ‘Unhealthy’ category at 227 on Friday, after being in the ‘poor’ category for the last couple of days.

In places like Kurla, Sion and Nerul, the AQI was above 300 in the ‘severe’ category, according to AQI India.

An AQI between 200 and 300 is considered unhealthy and triggers a health warning when above 300.
