New site for Mumbai Metro car shed will cost Rs 3,700 crore: BJP Maharashtra chief – Times of India

NAGPUR: Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Chandrakant Patil, who was revenue minister in the previous government, claimed that the state government would have to deposit Rs 3,700 crore with Bombay high court if it wants to construct Mumbai Metro car shed depot on the Kanjurmarg salt pan land.
A month after declaring over 800 acres of Aarey Colony in Mumbai a reserved forest, the state government recently scrapped construction of the car shed in Aarey Colony and announced shifting of the project toKanjurmarg.
Addressing a press conference in Nagpur on Wednesday, Patil said, “Son of a former MLA has claimed ownership of the land. When the Devendra Fadnavis government wanted to take over the land in 2015 for the shed, the high court had told us to deposit Rs 3,700 crore with it. The case is still pending in high court.”
Patil further said that the central government also claims ownership of the land and all salt pan lands in general.
“When I was minister, Konkan divisional commissioner had passed an order vesting ownership of the salt pan lands with the state government. I upheld his order. However, the salt commissioner, an employee of the central government, challenged my order in HC,” he said.
Fadnavis had decided to construct the Mumbai Metro car shed on Aarey land and felled a large number of trees.
Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has now overruled him and shifted the car shed to Kanjurmarg salt pan land. Maha Vikas Aghadiministers have been claiming that the land belongs to the state and there is no litigation regarding it.
Patil also slammed the state government for failing to conduct class XI admissions and delaying university exams.
He also said, “Farmers are in a pitiable condition, but the government is using diversionary tactics to shift the attention from their plight,” he added.
