Power supply in some parts of Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai restored after massive outage – Times of India

MUMBAI: After a massive power outage in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, supply was gradually restored in some parts, including Mumbai Central, Byculla, Tardeo, Andheri, Bhandup, Vikhroli, Churchgate, Sion, Chembur and Belapur. Train services were also restored on both Central and Western Railway lines.
Power outage in Mumbai on Monday brought the local trains, considered as the city’s lifeline, to a standstill for nearly two-and-a-half hours, causing hardships to commuters, railway officials said.
As fans and lights inside the trains also stopped working, many passengers preferred to jump out and walk on tracks to reach the nearest station or road.
According to railway officials, this was a rare occurrence in the recent past when the suburban services on both the Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) routes came to a halt due to power grid failure.
Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray spoke to state power minister Dr Nitin Raut and BMC commissioner IS Chahal over grid failure in Mumbai and gave directions for its restoration as soon as possible, according to Maharashtra CM’s office.
“Chief minister has given instructions for the restoration of power supply as soon as possible. He has also instructed departments like fire brigade, etc. to remain vigilant during this time of need. The Chief Minister has also instructed the local authorities to make proper arrangements for the standard passengers of Mumbai local trains,” as per an official statement.

What caused power outage
Energy minister Nitin Raut said that MSETCL 400 kV Kalwa-Padgha GIS circuit 1 was taken for repair and maintenance today due to which the load was on second unit circuit. Unfortunately, there was a technical problem in second unit which led to major power outage across Mumbai Metropolitan Region, said Raut. Officials said it will take half an hour to an hour for restoration and power supply is being restored at few places already.

There has been multiple tripping of lines and transformer (Kalwa-padghe and Khargar ICTs) supplying power to Mumbai system, sources said. The supply in Mumbai and suburbs is affected.

“The electric supply in island city is interrupted due to Tata Power’s incoming electric supply failure,” said a BEST official.
