Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane face power cut as grid trips – Economic Times

After a widespread power outage in and around Mumbai, supply was gradually restored in some areas, including Churchgate, Thane, Sion, Chembur, Andheri and Belapur. Train services were also restored on both Central and Western Railway lines.

The power supply had been disrupted in most parts of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane due to electricity grid failure on Monday morning.

At around 11:35, Maharashtra energy minister Nitin Raut said that the power supply would be restored in an hour. “Mumbai-Thane-Kalyan power failure is being attended to. Kalwa- padgha transmissions line got tripped, hence Thane- Palghar, New Mumbai power is off. Consequently, cascading the power failure to Mumbai-Thane and Mumbai suburban city. It will be restored in approximately an hour.”

A spokesperson from Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking told ET that power supply from Tata Power has stopped completely since morning. “We buy approximately 800 megawatt of power from Tata Power which has completely stopped, as a result power supply across the Mumbai region is disrupted affecting our supply base of over 10 lakh consumers.

Mumbai electricity sector officials said that there was an incidence of failure in the central grid-Tata Power connection at Kalwa, causing disruption.

Tata Power Company said that it is working on restoration of power. “At 10.10 am there was simultaneous substation tripping in MSETCL’s Kalwa, Kharghar causing a huge dip in frequency in the Mumbai transmission system which led to tripping of Mumbai power supply. Restoration work is in progress to bring supply from the three Hydro units and Trombay units once the MSETCL transmission lines are connected,” the Tata group utility said in a statement.

Mumbai has three electricity distribution companies (discoms)–the state run BEST Undertaking, and the private sector companies Adani Electricity and Tata Power Company. Tata Power is also a power generator supplying a bulk of the electricity that the city consumes.

Adani Electricity said, “ There is a major power grid failure due to which supply is affected in most areas of mumbai. As per grid safety protocols, Adani Power System has been able to sustain and islanded AEML is currently supplying to critical services in Mumbai Around 385MW through AEML Dahanu generation. Our teams are working to restore the supply in the affected areas at the earliest. We regret the inconvenience caused.”
