Covid-19: Navi Mumbai records 31,000 cases, crosses Thane’s tally – Times of India

NAVI MUMBAI: Navi Mumbai surpassed Thane in number of Covid-19 cases, and now has the second highest number of cases in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, after Kalyan-Dombivli.
While Kalyan-Dombivli, with a population of 18 lakh, crossed 35,000 cases, Navi Mumbai, with a 15 lakh population, crossed 31,005 cases on Monday, pushing Thane to third highest with 30,601 cases. Thane has 22 lakh a population. Cases in Navi Mumbai increased faster than in Thane. Navi Mumbai recorded 5, 000 cases in 14 days, against Thane’s 17 days.
Navi Mumbai tops the testing list, with 1,61,902 tests conducted till Monday—10.8% of its population. Kalyan-Dombivli, with 1,05,452 tests till date— has tested 5.9% of its population. Thane, with 2,33,692 tests, has tested 10.62% of its population.
The Thane Municipal Corporation expedited testing in the last week. An official from the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) said they will increase testing in the coming days. KDMC is currently conducting 1,500-2,000 tests a day, which is the lowest among the three cities. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is conducting 2,000-3,000 tests a day, and Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is conducting 4,000-5,000 tests a day.
