In a shocking incident, a hospital in Mumbai’s Malad allegedly charged Rs 21 lakh to a patient for treatment and refused to hand over the dead body till the complete amount was paid.
The incident took place at Lifeline Multispeciality Hospital in Mumbai.
BJP’s Opposition leader in legislative Council Pravin Darekar has demanded that a case be filed against the hospital for charging an exorbitant amount to a patient even in the time of the COVID crisis.
Darekar visited the hospital to question the authorities about the same.
“Hospitals are thrashing government circulars. Only issuing the circular is not enough, it needs to be controlled and monitored, but here, that is clearly lacking. That is why a bill of Rs. 3,500 is charged for a kit of Rs. 300,” said Pravin Darekar.
Moreover, the patient’s family was given the bill even when the patient had died. The family had already paid around Rs 8 lakh to the hospital.
Darekar also warned that the Mumbai Municipal Corporation and the police should seal the hospital and take immediate action against the hospital, otherwise the BJP will start an agitation.
He also alleged that the experience shows that such hospitals are only set up to loot people. “A PPE kit costs Rs 3,500!? Biomedical waste charges are Rs 2,500 and the full bill is Rs 77,500. This is how the looting continues.”
Darekar pointed out that the bill for medicines came to Rs 10.62 lakh.
Darekar also wondered if the BMC or the government had any control or oversight in such cases. “As the opposition, we are exposing how people are being looted but the government is silent. Therefore, the police and the municipal corporation should immediately file a case against such hospitals and seal them.”
Mirror tried to reach the hospital for a response. This story will be updated if and when they respond.
