Mumbai rain live updates: 268.6mm rainfall recorded in Santacruz – Times of India

MUMBAI: Heavy overnight rains lashed Mumbai, satellite cities, the suburbs and the coastal North Konkan belt on Tuesday hitting road and rail traffic. There was a huge landslide on a hillock with tonnes of debris falling on the Western Express Highway at Malad, blocking south-bound road traffic with commuters stuck. Here are the latest updates from the rain-hit city:

* The India Meteorological Department recorded 268.6mm of rain in Mumbai’s Santacruz, 252.2mm in Colaba and 175mm in Basai on Tuesday, following incessant rainfall in the city. Many areas, including King’s Circle and Santa Cruz, were flooded with rainwater.
* 230mm rainfall occurred within 10 hours. It’s a flood-like situation. Mithi river had swelled up in the morning because of heavy rains, crossing the danger mark. As of now, it is flowing below danger level. The evacuation of people has also been stopped right now: BMC Commissioner
* A person got electrocuted after accidentally touching an electric pole in Maharashtra’s Thane city on Tuesday morning following heavy overnight rains, police said. The man was standing near a temple in Ovla area on Ghodbunder Road when he accidentally touched the electric pole and got electrocuted around 8.30am, an official from Kasarwadavali police station said.

* Harbour Line closed due to waterlogging following heavy rainfall in parts of Mumbai and suburbs

* According to BMC, Mumbai city received 140.5 mm rain from 8 am on August 3 to 3 am on August 4. The Eastern and Western Suburbs recorded 84.77 mm and 79.27 mm of rainfall respectively.
Overnight rain leads to waterlogging in Mumbai; red alert in city for 2 days
With continuous rainfall all through the night people in several parts of Mumbai on Tuesday woke up to severe waterlogging. The weather department has sounded a red alert for today and tomorrow for extremely heavy rain in Mumbai.
All non-essential shops in city can open daily from tomorrow
From Wednesday, shops in Mumbai can stay open on all days of the week and those on all sides of the road can stay open at the same time. Liquor shops, too, can sell across the counter, the BMC has said in a circular issued on Monday on revised guidelines for the ‘unlocking’ phase.
More recoveries than cases in state for third day running
For the third day in a row, the state’s discharges were more than its fresh addition of Covid-19 cases. Maharashtra on Monday added 8,968 new cases, taking its total cases to 4,50,196 by breaching the 4.5 lakh mark. A total of 10,221 patients were discharged on Monday, taking the total discharges in the state to 2,87,030. The recovery rate of Maharashtra jumped to 63.7%, very close to the national rate of 64%.
