As Cyclone Nisarga nears Mumbai, here are some useful tips you can follow at home to ensure your own saf – Mumbai Mirror

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that the tropical storm Nisarga also called Cyclone Nisarga, which is heading towards Gujarat and Maharashtra, is likely to intensify into a “severe cyclonic storm” in the next 24 hours and is expected to make landfall close to Mumbai on June 3.

The IMD has also stated that Mumbai and the entire West Maharashtra coast will be on red alert once the depression intensifies into a cyclone.

As we prepare to face the wrath of nature once again with cyclone Nisarga approaching, extra precautions need to taken to ensure safety and prevent damage.

Here’s a list of the basic but useful guidelines which you can follow at home:

– All balconies should be clear of any hanging material (flower pots, cardboard boxes, rolling items, hanging decorative pieces, hanging pots)

– Check for any loose glass window, door panel and get it repaired

– Two-wheelers to be on the main stand to prevent it from falling on nearby cars in parking areas

– Keep a first aid kid handy at homes for any small cut, bruises

– Powerbanks, mobile phones should be charged in case of power failure

– Ensure sufficient drinking water in case of power loss to water purifier

– Shoe racks to be properly shut. Ensure all shoes and other items are kept inside and properly closed.

– If you have any satellite dish placed at your balcony, ensure it is firmly attached and not loose. In case of heavy winds, there could be a threat of it coming off and posing a potential danger to other residents.

– Check the outer units of split air-conditioners and make sure they are firmly screwed in place.

– Keep old towels handy if the rainwater comes into the house so you can use them to quickly soak the water ingress.

– Ensure storage of essential items like grocery, milk, vegetables, medicines, etc.

– Keep windows and doors shut and do not sit or stand near the glass windows

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray through video conference on Monday and took stock of the state’s preparedness to tackle any eventuality.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is carefully monitoring the movement of deep depression over east-central and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea that will intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm Nisarga over Eastcentral Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours. Mumbaikars need to stay alert as the cyclone is expected to affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra.
