8 lakh migrants have left Mumbai, 2 lakh more set to go – Times of India

MUMBAI: Of the roughly 10 lakh migrant workers in the city who applied to return to their native states, around 6.5 lakh have left on trains so far while 1.5 lakh used other modes of transport. The remaining two lakh are waiting to leave.
“We receive barely any applications now,” said a police officer. Earlier, the police used to receive more than one and a half lakh applications a week. Now, all migrants from south Mumbai’s Gamdevi and Bhuleshwar and western Mumbai’s Bandra (East) and the airport area have been sent home by trains. There are no fresh applications at all in these two zones.

Ashok Pranaya, who holds the charge of DCP (operations) and is the city police spokesman, said there are few fresh registrations nowadays.

Almost a million migrants have already left the city. More than 55,000 were sent to their hometowns by train from CSMT railway station on Tuesday alone. “Now, there are no applications at several police stations. A few come citing an emergency,” said DCP Ashok Pranaya.
A senior police officer from north Mumbai said 70% of migrant workers in his jurisdiction have left by train, cars or buses. “There were many buses that dropped migrants to the state border and now the number of applications is reducing,” he said.
Javed Juneda, Congress corporator from the Nagpada-Kamthipura belt, said 70% of migrants from his constituency have been sent home. Most of the labourers in this area were from UP and Bihar who worked in zari units and leather goods manufacturing units.
From south Mumbai’s Grant Road, Gamdevi, Malabar Hill and Bhuleshwar, almost 100% of the 30,000-odd migrants have left, said a police source. Similarly, in Zone-VIII, which comprises Bandra (East), Kherwadi, Bharat Nagar in Bandra-Kurla Complex, Sahar and domestic airport area, Vile Parle and Nirmal Nagar, all 80,000 migrants have been sent home. Some left in private vehicles.
Vinay Chaubey, joint police commissioner (law and order), said, “We are making all the arrangements for them and are in touch with the railways and BEST authorities for smooth transportation.”
Vinod Mishra, BJP corporator from Kurar Village in Malad (East), said he along with others sent a full bus to Rajasthan. A train for Jaunpur was arranged too for 1,365 people. “These were labourers living in rented rooms and they left first. Now the families are leaving. We also sent a bus to Washim district in Maharashtra,” he said. “We had a call centre and a WhatsApp group to monitor the situation. We keep updates and coordinate with police.”
