Mumbai, Thane record highest single-day spike – Mumbai Mirror

While the city reported 1,751 confirmed cases and 27 deaths, Thane for the first time recorded nearly 200 cases

Mumbai recorded its highest single-day spike on Friday with 1,751 positive coronavirus cases, bringing the total reported positive cases in the city to 27,251. According to BMC data, the total number of deaths rose by 27, with the tally now at 909. Friday also witnessed the biggest spike in the state. The state tally, according to the Health Department, stands at 44,582.

Out of 27 deaths on Friday, 22 patients had comorbidities, according to the BMC. One of the deceased was below 40 years of age, while 13 were between the ages of 40 and 60, and another 13 above the age of 60.

The number of fresh cases detected in the city has been progressively increasing over the past two weeks, with the number of new cases rising from around 900 a day to a four-digit number yesterday. BMC officials said the civic body expects to reach a peak in the coming weeks.

Out of 12,583 people who have recovered and left quarantine facilities across the state, 7,080 are from Mumbai. On Friday alone, 329 patients were discharged after complete recovery, the BMC said.

Currently, there are 23,264 ‘suspected’ patients admitted in various facilities across Mumbai.

The BMC also announced that it has developed a live dashboard to display the availability of beds and for handling patient transfers. It also stated that its dedicated helpline, which started on April 24, has received 69,407 calls for assistance so far.

Surge in Thane


In the neighbouring Thane, Friday marked the biggest jump in positive cases so far – 197 cases were detected in a single day. So far, the rise in cases was around 80-95 per day; Wednesday was the only exception with 110 fresh cases. The total number of cases in Thane is now 1,757. The Thane Municipal Corporation expects an exponential rise in cases by the end of the month, an official told Mirror.

The Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) recorded 57 new cases and one death on Friday, bringing the total number of cases to 699. Meanwhile, there were 63 new cases and two deaths in the area under the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), which has recorded 1,485 cases so far. Meanwhile, the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) recorded 51 new cases.
