In the highest-ever single-day rise of coronavirus cases in Mumbai, as many as 998 new infections were detected, taking the tally to 16,579 on Thursday. 25 more patients succumbed to the disease, taking the death toll in the financial capital beyond the 600-mark.On the other hand, 70 cases were reported in Thane, 64 in Navi Mumbai, 21 in Mira Bhayander and six in Kalyan-Dombivali. MMR witnessed 46 deaths in a day.The Uddhav Thackeray-led government announced that the lockdown in Mumbai, Pune and other hotspots in the state will be extended up to May 31. In other areas of the state, it will implement the guidelines that the Centre will issue in the next two days.The state-appointed task force on Covid-19 has asked the government to reserve 80 per cent of the beds in both private and public hospitals in Mumbai for coronavirus patients, indicating the city has entered the most critical part of its fight against the virus. Dr Sanjay Oak-led task force told the CM that close to 20,000 people will need hospitalisation in the next week or so.The nationwide tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases crossed 80,000 on Thursday, while the government unveiled special measures amounting to over Rs 3 lakh crore for migrant workers, farmers and other segments of the economy to help them tide over the COVID-19 pandemic. The death toll in the country has crossed 2,500.
