With 692 persons testing positive the number of coronavirus cases in Mumbai rose to 11,219 and death toll reached 437 as 25 patients died in the city on Thursday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. Of the new cases, 72 are inmates and seven are staff members of the city’s Arthur Road Jail who were found to be positive after random swab testing.The BMC has arranged over 3000 rooms in 88 hotels to quarantine people returning from various countries in the coming days. Out of 64 evacuation flights under Vande Bharat Mission, seven will land in Mumbai carrying 1900 passengers.Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray also held a meeting with a central team and discussed regarding increasing the capacity of institutional quarantine in the state.Meanwhile, a special train carrying 1,168 migrant labourers of Madhya Pradesh reached Habibganj station on Thursday from Maharashtra’s Panvel. Also, 1200 migrant workers left for Bihar from Thane station. The state government on Thursday announced that medical certificates will be no longer required for the passengers and they will be screened at the station itself.The nationwide tally of COVID-19 cases crossed 56,000 on Thursday with big urban centres like Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Chennai reporting rising numbers of people having tested positive for the contagious virus infection.
