BMC chief Praveen Pardeshi transferred as Mumbai struggles… – Economic Times

MUMBAI: In a sudden move, the Maharashtra government replaced Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Praveen Pardeshi with IS Chahal. Pardeshi was posted as the additional chief secretary (urban development).

Ashwini Bhide, who earlier headed the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, and Sanjeev Jaiswal were appointed as additional municipal commissioner (BMC).

The reshuffle came as Mumbai was struggling with more than 400 covid-19 cases per day.

Mumbai had more than 11,000 positive cases and 437 deaths till friday, the rise in cases also led to a situation where both public and private hospitals were struggling to arrange beds in ICUs.

Pardeshi, known for overseeing the relief and rehabilitation efforts after the Latur Earth quake, was swimming against the tide as the BMC chief as he was seen as someone close to former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

There were murmurs of Pardeshi being at loggerheads with chief secretary Ajoy Mehta. Government officials said the Sion hospital incident, where dead bodies were kept next to patients, coupled with the rising number of cases in the city led to Pardeshi’s transfer.

Interestingly, Bhide was at loggerheads with the Shiv Sena over the Metro project being located at Aarey.
