The four wards in south Mumbai are G-North, G-South, D and E, and these have reported the most cases in the city. These wards have several containment zones that are contiguous — together they form a Covid-19 belt — that should be considered a “large outbreak”, said a central team report.
The central team, which visited the city last week to ascertain its preparedness, said both contiguous containment zones and the clusters in the western suburbs need strict perimeter control.
G-South has 600 positive cases, while the G-North has over 350 cases. D ward has 285 positive cases, while E ward has close to 500 positive cases.
The central team advised the BMC to ensure daily sanitisation and contact tracing.
The three wards in the western suburbs that the central team suggested should be treated as separate clusters while imposing containment measures are K-West, K-East and H-East.
Other recommendations include rigorous active case searching, manpower for active house-to-house search to be augmented with trained volunteers, augmentation of dedicated Covid-19 hospital infrastructure, and strengthening of laboratory support so that reports are available in a day.
Enhanced dissemination of information, education and communication is essential to removing social stigma and encouraging self-reporting, said the report.
Municipal commissioner Praveen Pardeshi said the BMC was ensuring that containment zones were strictly defined and marked. “There are cameras as well that track any movement within these containment zones. Besides, there is continuous disinfection, screening and testing within these zones,” he said.
