‘NRI suitor’ dupes Mumbai woman of Rs 3 lakh – Times of India

MUMBAI: A month after registering her profile on a matrimonial website, a 32-year-old woman from Saki Naka, was cheated of nearly Rs 3 lakh by a man masquerading as a suitor and claiming to be an NRI.
The conman, who identified himself as Niraj Kapoor, told the woman he was on a visit to India to meet her. He made the victim transfer Rs 2.98 lakh to a bank account, claiming he had been detained by Customs officials at Delhi airport for carrying undeclared goods and US dollars.
Saki Naka police registered the case on Monday after the fraudsters demanded another Rs 6 lakh.
The victim, employed with a private firm, lodged a complaint after she rang a friend at Delhi airport and learnt no one called Sonia Sharma was employed with customs there.
A woman claiming to be customs official Sonia Sharma had called her to ask money for Kapoor’s release. “The victim registered the case after the conman got in touch with her through a matrimonial site. The cyber team is probing the case,” said senior inspector Kishore Sawant. The victim was duped on March 3 and 4.
